Jamini Roy was an Indian modernist painter who redefined art in colonial India by drawing inspiration from local folk traditions. Born in Beliatore, Bengal, Roy trained in classical academic painting before turning to Kalighat pat styles and indigenous techniques. His works, marked by bold lines and flat colors, celebrated rural life, mythology, and Indian identity. Roy’s rejection of Western styles in favor of traditional Indian art made him a pioneer in the Indian modern art movement. Today, his paintings are celebrated as cultural treasures, symbolizing a return to roots during India’s struggle for independence.
